HALLOWEEN CREEPERS by Chris, Grade 7

Ghosts and gulls crawl into the night
Werewolves and vampires go out and fright
Zombies and skeletons bust out of their graves
Bats and witches come out of their cave
Scarecrows and gargoyles descend off their shrines
Frankenstein stares at a spooky sign
It reads, "Prepare yourself for Halloween night
because when it is time, it'll be quite a sight!"
Here are three 4th grade poems using the Hoot and Howls writing lesson.

Fifth grade students enjoyed and discussed the mentor text. The word chart was built in their journals. Since I travel to 8 schools (17 classes) weekly, a rubric was used to qualify student writing for consideration. It included 1) Evidence of words from mentor text 2) Poem modeled after mentor text sample 3) Relevant title 4)Fully-developed topic 5) Writing process. It was extremely difficult to choose just three poems. That's a good thing! Enjoy!

It’s Hard Being a Spider
G – Grade 5

It’s hard being a spider
Because
everybody
SCREAMS
And
SHOUTS!!
People
Whack and smack.
Try being a spider
For a day
And
Call me back
And
Tell me how it was.

Being a spider is hard
Because
Outside it is cold;
I freeze to death.
When it rains outside,
My web gets destroyed.
The hardest part
About being a spider
Is finding food.
Like I said,
Call me…
I’m waiting.

Being a spider is hard,
But
It does have its perks;
Because
You get to scare little girls.

Halloween Night
Kaitlyn – Grade 5

It’s Halloween night!
It’s creepy with
Ghosts
And
Mummies
And
Bats.
Witches
And
Goblins
And
Spiders
Under the midnight sky.
The class did the assignment and these three seemed to edge out the others. The students enjoyed playing with the words. We look forward to future adventures together. Thanks and enjoy.

Emily- Grade 5
A small, sad jack-o-lantern sat alone on Halloween Night,
Without anyone to give a fright.
There he sat all alone,
When suddenly he heard a ghostly groan.

He looked around into the black night,
And what he saw gave him a fright.
Standing there in the slippery road,
Was a big, fat, ugly toad.

He asked the toad why he was there,
And the toad replied, "Why I am giving some scare!"
So off they went into the night,
Giving some creatures quite the fright.

Matt- Grade 5
Halloween is the spookiest time of year,
When witches make their brew and pumpkins have faces.
When goblins are green and fright filled faces are seen.
Enough talk! Let's go trick-or-treating.
But I don't have a costume.
Should I be a ghoul or a ghost or a warlock?
We will see what Halloween brings to us.

Matthew- Grade 5
The giant grey werewolves jumped out the dark misty forests into the large, creepy meadows.
Skeletons clikcing and clacking down the dark road, ready to scare the little boys and girls.
Little blood sucking bats flying in the nice, misty air of the night sky.
Vampires waking from their long snooze in their dark, warm coffins.
They are ready to scare on Halloween.
Kids hollering, kids screaming, "It's Halloween!"
They run door to door snatching candy one by one.
It's Halloween.
I know the contest is over...but I thought I'd share a wonderful poem one of my students wrote yesterday.
