Writing Lesson of the Month Network
...sharing thoughtful, mentor text-inspired lessons your students will love!
Read over 60 student essays this week-end...sometimes being an English/writing teacher is not that fun. My red eyes could sure use a break from paper-reading.
I continue dedicating the month of May to writing about social issues that help students realize they can make a difference to the bigger world. This week, I'll suggest A Circle of Friends by Giora Carmi, a wordless book that starts with a child giving a muffin to a homeless man. It's a beautiful story told with just pictures that my students loves to talk about after I share it.Here come this week's prompts. If any don't appeal to you right now, remember, you can access hundreds of prompts online at: http://writingfix.com/classroom_tools/dailypromptgenerator.htm
Monday: "Then why did you make that mistake? In honor of the old song lyrics, write about the person in your life who was 'Your Favorite Mistake.'"
Tuesday: "Will you stay away forever? Write about a place you try not to go to because it stirs up strong emotions in you."
Wednesday: Social Issue Brainstorm Day! What's the last cause you donated money to? Write a monologue from a character's point-of-view who would NEVER donate to that same cause.
Thursday: "Why is it the most important meal of the day? Write something that begins and ends with eating breakfast."
Friday: "What spice in a spice rack best represents you OR someone you know? Describe it in a piece of writing."
Saturday: "Which old item would make a better description? Write about finding a rusty lock or a rusty locket."
Have a great week.
