Writing Lesson of the Month Network
...sharing thoughtful, mentor text-inspired lessons your students will love!
Ooops. A day late and more than a dollar short here. Memorial Day weekend always messes with my mind; I think it's Sunday, but then it turns out to be Monday.
I continue dedicating the month of May to writing about social issues that help students realize they can make a difference to the bigger world. This final week of May I will remind my teacher friends about Byrd Baylor's amazing book (that all of us should know)--The Table Where Rich People Sit. Here's an absolutely amazing story of rich versus poor, class versus class. In this simple picture book, there are so many amazing discussion points, especially during this era of economic struggle. Teachers who don't know this story yet...change that. Here come this week's prompts. If any don't appeal to you right now, remember, you can access hundreds of prompts online at: http://writingfix.com/classroom_tools/dailypromptgenerator.htm
Monday: "Why don't people with working ears use them? Write about a time that someone refused to listen to some good advice."
Tuesday: "Is it kind of like sweet and sour? Write about something sad that has an undertone of funny, or something funny with an undertone of sadness."
Wednesday: Social Issue Brainstorm Day! Inspired by the suggested "mentor text above," think of a time when you felt uncomfortable because someone else nearby was either richer or poorer than you. Write about it.
Thursday: "What does June feel like? Write a poem or paragraph (or whatever) that explains your opinion of and emotions felt for the twelve different months of the year."
Friday: "How warm is too warm? Describe the perfect summer day from your past...or your imagination."
Saturday: "Who do you suppose the dye job was really for? Write about someone who has obviously dyed his/her hair."
Have a great week.
