Supply Lists

Hi!

Our guidance counselor wants to hand out supply lists when parents and students come in for registration counseling starting next week.  My plan is to take my 7/8th grade students through the 6 traits and also establish a reading workshop.  We are a UMS, so we only meet 4 days a week; my thinking was to alternate between Writing Work and Reading Workshop.

We will need to do 2-3 novels as a class, but otherwise, it will be their choice of what to read and what project to do for it.

Anyhoo, I'm trying to figure out what supplies to ask for and how many/what dividers they need in their notebooks.

Here's what I have so far:

-set of 5 highlighters (pink, yellow, orange, blue, green)

-3x3 post its (yellow, green, blue, orange and purple – 1 pad each)

-1 inch binder exclusively for English

-blue or black pen

-set of dividers (labeled:  Mini-Lesson Notes, Handouts, ... ???

I know I'm missing some crucial stuff, but I'm "spring-forward-lagged" or something!

Hello, Terrie.  I hope you are having a wonderful summer.  Yes, the class supply list...I debate this every year, and I am never happy with it.  Honestly, you have listed everything I ask for - highlighters (A MUST!), post its (YES!), binders, pens/pencils. (I do not use dividers because we keep everything in chronological order, using post-it tabs to label new concepts.) I also do a composition notebook for Writer's Workshop. 

I hope we get some more replies.  I REALLY want to hear what others are using in their classrooms.

Thanks, Jennifer! This was pretty much the list I gave our guidance counselor (plus composition books). One of my primary concerns, really, is them having a binder just for my class. Too many things I gave out last year were lost in those "pit of despair" 3-inch zipper binders the kids used to hold everything for all their classes.

Hopefully we'll get more replies as school gets closer.

Yes, I think it is essential to have a separate notebook for each class...great for organization!

Hi Terrie,

I am teaching 6,7 and 8th grade LA this year for the first time in a long time and I really struggled over what to ask for as far as supplies go.  We had to turn in our lists in May.  I asked for a composition notebook for both reading and writing, post-its, a 5 subject notebook, I'll use it for vocab, grammar, misc.  and colored pencils.  I hope I am not ending up buying a bunch of stuff I should have thought to ask for.
