Sentence Fluency has become my "Trait of the Month" now that the Organization-heavy rubric of the State Writing Test is behind us!  Time to teach poetry and sentence rhythm skills!  Hooray!

Cynthia Rylant's book, In November, inspired last year's fifth grade writers to think hard and write about those things that happen only in the month of February.  

This display validated their work as writers.  

They became so excited when students and adults stood in front of it pointing, reading and smiling!

After looking at some of the boards, I decided to try my own. In my teaching I usually worry about what's on the wall last. However this time I decided to have a go at a bulletin board.  As our school year starts in February, we are at a different stage in the school year.  This month I am focusing on fluency in sentences. I have been using the participle phrase writer's notebook lesson.  As I have carpet on the back wall, I laminated the posters, and put velcro dots on the back. This means I can 'rip' it easily off the wall, when we are discussing a certain aspect about sentence crafting. It is very easy to stick back on.

My third and final bulletin board is my Reading Portfolio bulletin board.  It's probably my favorite...I hope this posting inspires others to post bulletin board pictures too!

I also put up a PUBLISHED AUTHORS bulletin board, using some writing I found at WritingFix; I expect to have my own students posted at WritingFix by the end of October, so their pictures will replace the ones I have started with!

Thanks, Angela.  I too was inspired to create my TRAIT OF THE MONTH Bulletin Board in my brand new classroom.  I too am starting with ideas, and since I am focusing on SHOWING all fall long, VOICE will be my trait of the month for October, and WORD CHOICE will be my trait of the month for November.

Oops... My Trait of the Month board is for the trait Ideas, I just realized I put the wrong trait poster in the middle.  I'll correct that the next time I'm up at the school.

I was inspired by Dena Robinson's writing trait bulletin board.  This is the board I have put together to start the school year with.  I plan to focus first on the trait of Organization in Aug./Sept.  I am imagining the board being a "living" board.  I want to change the photo, poem, writing samples, and graphic organizer weekly or bi-weekly.  Maybe even have the students bring in photos, poems, vote on writing samples, and create their own unique graphic organizer that supports the trait.  I still need to get out my book baskets for the table in front of the board.  I'm going to show case a variety of books (chapter and picture) that inspire the trait of the month.

I have established a writer's notebook bulletin board in my classroom. Students can explore it for ideas to write about on days they don't seem to have an idea. I hope others are inspired to post their topic-inspiring classroom tools! See both pictures below!
