Hi Kendra...just catching up on some Ning work.  I really liked your Norman Rockwell suggestions for writer's notebooks.  Can I ask you to repost it in the "Writer's Notebook" sub-group, and I will draw everyone's attention to it with a message broadcast to everyone?

Here is where it needs to be posted:  http://writinglesson.ning.com/group/usingwritersnotebooks

Here is your original post so you don't have to re-type it:

Objective: Students will brainstorm ideas for a short story

Trait: Organization, writing hooks

Time: 15 minutes

Materials: colored photocopies of Norman Rockwell paintings

1. Display Norman Rockwell photocopies. Have several photocopies for each image you choose.

2. Instruct students to choose a painting that interests them and paste the photocopy into their notebook.

3. Students will jot down words or phrases the story bring to mind under the headings Setting, Character, Problem, Solution.

4. After a mini-lesson on engaging hooks, students could compose a few different hooks for the beginning of the story they have imagined.

5. Share with partner or small group to help pick their favorite hook.
