One of the difficult challenges is our 6th grade is the beginning of our middle school experience. There are so many changes and challenges that these students face.

I am a former elementary teacher who has moved to a 6th grade middle school  LA class. It is difficult to balance the reading and the writing in the course of five 45 minute blocks. I believe that the kids are still learning to read so reading instruction has to be balanced with writing instruction. I would like to give both equal time but no matter what I come up with I feel as though lessons become disjointed. My seventh and eight grade teachers teach mostly writing.

Hi Melissa,

Just wondering how you have planned to fit writing, grammar, reading into your 55 minute class. I constantly struggle with this balance and I have about 45 minutes per day to accomplish everything. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
