How long should a student have to write in his notebook?

Many of my students draw and doodle on their papers.  I am using notebooks as a creative writing opportunity to connect classroom literature with individual thinking and writing.  I like the idea of illustrations on student writing samples but not interested in graffiti or child like drawings. School appropriate topics are covered in the student handbook.  Any suggestions?
